Retro Games Hire: Meet the BIG BOY
Some event games are fun. This one is 7 feet tall.
The BIG BOY is our giant Game Boy style console, and it’s the centrepiece of our retro games hire range. It does what you’d hope a 7ft games machine does, which is turn heads and pull a crowd. People who claim they “don’t really do games” tend to go quiet about that the moment they see it.
We designed and built it ourselves, so you won’t find another one at the event down the road. It’s a MiniRacing original, loaded with the retro classics most of us grew up on. Mario-style platformers, that sort of thing. Proper pixel-perfect 8-bit stuff.
How the BIG BOY works
This isn’t a screen with a controller taped to the front. The BIG BOY has working giant buttons and an oversized D-pad the size of a dinner plate. Guests stand up and play it like the handheld they had as a kid, just scaled up to something faintly ridiculous.
That’s the bit people love. Watching two grown adults frantically hammer a giant D-pad while a crowd eggs them on is genuinely good fun, and it pulls in everyone from the work-experience kid to the managing director.

Retro games hire that suits any event
We’ve taken the BIG BOY all over the place and it tends to earn its keep wherever it lands.
At corporate events and exhibitions it works as a stand magnet. People stop to play, they hang around afterwards, and that gives your team a natural way into a conversation. A lot more effective than a bowl of branded sweets.
For weddings and parties it gives guests something to do in the gaps, between the speeches and the first dance. It photographs well too, which the couple usually appreciate later.
Festivals and public events are no problem. It’s built tough and happy to be played all day by a queue of people who won’t go easy on it.
And it’s a favourite for big birthdays, especially the milestone ones, where a good chunk of the room had a real Game Boy in their hands first time around.
Why hire the BIG BOY from MiniRacing
We’ve been hiring out event games since 1994. That’s a long time to get good at landing a machine at a venue, setting it up without drama, and keeping it running from the first guest to the last.
The BIG BOY is one of our own builds, designed in-house and looked after by people who’d be quite annoyed if it stopped working halfway through your event. It’s a retro games hire centrepiece that holds its own, not a flimsy prop that looks sad by 9pm.
The practical bits
The BIG BOY stands around 7ft tall and roughly 3ft wide. It runs off a [standard 13A socket / 300w], and we handle delivery, setup and collection. It fits through a standard doorway / gets assembled on-site, it does require elevator access. We cover events UK-wide and we’re happy to talk through the access and logistics for your particular venue before you book.
Hire the BIG BOY for your event
