Scalextric vs. Carrera: Which is Right for You?

Carrera

Although less known in the UK, Carrera is the world’s largest slot car brand, with a strong presence in Europe and the USA. Its range rivals that of Scalextric and often appeals more to serious racers.

  • Superior Quality
  • The wider track is ideal for racing and accommodates larger 1:24 scale cars.
  • Wider track slots make it easier to reposition cars on the track.
  • The track is sturdier, especially suitable for elevated sections.
  • Track connections are more reliable and secure.
  • Wireless throttles are rechargeable and come with a dedicated charging dock.
  • Car settings and race starts can be easily adjusted without needing additional software or apps.
  • The track supports both 1:32 and 1:24 scale cars, offering distinct racing experiences.
  • Enhanced features for competitive racing, including sector timing and more.

Scalextric

The UK’s most recognized slot car brand, Scalextric offers a diverse selection of products catering to both children and adults.

  • More widely available in the UK
  • More cost-effective
  • Smaller track is ideal for confined spaces
  • Track assembly is simpler

Both systems operate on the same fundamental principle, so you’re likely to be satisfied with either. However, there are certain situations where we would suggest choosing one over the other.

For Sets Under £60 for Children

We suggest Carrera GO! This range is much broader than the Scalextric ‘Micro’ range, offering a wide selection of track extensions and additional cars for purchase.

When Space is Limited

Scalextric is our recommendation. Its track is much smaller and includes tighter radius turns, allowing you to fit more track into compact spaces.

For Larger Sets for Older Children and Adults

We recommend Carrera. As shown in the table above, Carrera is better suited for serious racing and offers the future option of upgrading to 1:24 scale cars.

Scalextric
  • My First – Suitable for 3+ – 1:64 Scale
  • Micro Scalextric – Suitable for 4+ – 1:64 Scale
  • “Standard” Scalextric – Suitable for 5+ – 1:32 Scale
Carrera
  • First – Suitable for 3+ – 1:50 Scale

  • Carrera GO! – Suitable for 5+ – 1:43 Scale

  • Carrera Evolution/Digital – Suitable for 8+ – 1:32 Scale

  • Carrera 1:24 – Suitable for 10+ – 1:24 Scale

"Standard Scalextric" vs "Standard Carrera"

A direct comparison of the two systems is provided above.

"My First" vs "First"

These two systems are quite similar and aren’t easily expandable. However, Carrera has the advantage of slightly larger cars and operates on batteries.

"Micro Scalextric" vs "Carrera GO!"

We recommend Carrera GO! This range is significantly larger than Scalextric’s “Micro” series, offering a good selection of track extensions and additional cars. The cars are also larger and more detailed.

  • 1:64 Scale – This is the smallest size available, found only in the Scalextric “My First” and “Micro” sets. The cars measure approximately 75mm in length and are low on detail.
  • 1:50 Scale – This size is exclusive to Carrera First. The cars are around 85mm long and feature good detailing.
  • 1:43 Scale – Available only in Carrera GO!, these cars are about 100mm long and offer a high level of detail.
  • 1:32 Scale – The most common size for slot cars, with cars measuring approximately 140mm in length. At this scale, the cars are very detailed.
  • 1:24 Scale – This size is exclusive to Carrera. Cars in this scale are about 175mm long and boast incredible detail. Scalextric tracks are not large enough to accommodate this size car.

Here is an illustration to show the size difference between the scales.

Analogue vs Digital vs ARC

Scalextric Analogue & Carrera Evolution

Analogue Scalextric and Carrera Evolution offer traditional slot car racing with two lanes, two cars, and each driver controlling their own car on a single lane. Although Analogue uses the same track system as Digital (Sport Track), the powerbase, hand controllers, and power supply differ.

You can upgrade your Analogue set to Digital by purchasing a conversion kit or individual parts.

Scalextric ARC App Racing

Take slot racing to the next level with Scalextric ARC. The ARC powerbase connects to the Scalextric APP race control app on your smartphone or tablet, offering a modern slot racing experience. Some ARC systems feature wireless controllers for added convenience. Both analogue and digital versions of the ARC system are available, with three powerbases to choose from: ARC One, ARC Air, and ARC Pro. Detailed comparisons of the features and benefits are provided in the chart below CLICK HERE.

Most Scalextric sets can be easily upgraded to an ARC system, as the ARC powerbases come with Sport Track connectors.

Scalextric Digital

Digital Scalextric uses the same tracks and cars as Analogue, but cars are electronically chipped to enhance control. A basic Digital Set includes a 4-car powerbase, allowing up to four cars to race simultaneously on a 2-lane track, each controlled independently. 6-car powerbases are also available.

Digital racing introduces Lane Changers, which allow cars to switch lanes at specific points by pressing a button on the hand controller, enabling overtaking and blocking tactics. The Digital controllers also feature a brake button for faster deceleration. Lane changers and pit lane entries can expand the track to 3 or 4 lanes.

The Digital system uses the same Sport Track as Analogue, but the powerbase, controllers, and power supply are different, and cars need to be chipped or fitted with a Digital plug.

Carrera Digital

Similar to Scalextric Digital, Carrera Digital allows up to six cars to race simultaneously with lane-changing capabilities for overtaking opponents.

  • Adjustable speed with up to 10 levels, depending on driver skill.
  • Simple vehicle coding via the manual control unit.
  • Carrera Digital cars can be used with Carrera Evolution Analogue.
  • Features include a pace car and autonomous car functions.
  • Adjustable maximum speed and braking behavior.
  • Optional pit stop lane with adjustable fuel capacity.
  • Rechargeable wireless controllers.
  • Appconnect feature allows real-time racing information through the Carrera App.
